MAPP Festival
Carte Blanche for the Soundtrack of MAPP_MTL Festival
We recently had the opportunity to create the soundtrack for the MAPP Montreal festival, a project that was particularly close to our hearts. MAPP_MTL is more than just a festival; it's a platform that transforms public spaces into dynamic canvases for creative expression through projection mapping. Founded in 2016 by artist Thien Vu Dang, this organization highlights local talent while fostering the development of this innovative artistic practice.
Every year, the festival hosts a series of events and workshops that push the boundaries of creative innovation. By creating an inclusive dialogue between residents, artists, and neighborhoods, MAPP_MTL positions itself as a key player in the promotion of projection mapping.
9th Edition: A Theme of "Perspectives"
For this 9th edition, the chosen theme was "Perspectives," a fascinating subject that invites us to dive into the complex perceptions of reality, especially in a context where artificial intelligence is redefining our benchmarks. Our visions intertwine, sometimes clash, creating a true kaleidoscope of subjective truths.
This year, the festival's visual identity was designed by Baillat Studio, a longtime collaborator of MAPP_MTL. Their work incorporates elements of artificial intelligence to reflect this exploration of perspectives, offering a cutting-edge visual approach in harmony with the theme.
A blend of technologies for a unique sound creation
To honor the visual and conceptual universe proposed by Baillat, we opted for a mixed technological approach in creating the soundtrack. The goal was to create a striking contrast between the projected visuals and the evolving soundscape.
Our starting point was the use of a Buchla modular synthesizer to compose the main piece. This type of synthesizer is known for its ability to produce rich, textured sounds, perfect for reflecting the complexity of the perspectives explored in the festival.
We then enhanced the composition with various sound banks that we processed using Spiff, an adaptive transient processor. This tool allowed us to manipulate transients with extreme precision, amplifying or reducing certain elements to create an almost ASMR-like effect, adding a sensory dimension to the sound experience.
Ultimately, this combination of technologies and approaches allowed us to present a soundtrack that perfectly aligns with the spirit of the festival, offering participants a new level of immersive experience.
